Although using the reading from BMI might not be an accurate measure for underweight, it can serve as a yardstick that will lead your physician to carry out a further evaluation.

Symptoms and risk factors associated with being underweight includes:

  1. Osteoporosis: This occurs as a result of low Bone Mineral Density (BMD). When you have low Bone Mineral Density there is an increased risk of the fragile bones getting easily broken.
  2. Decreased Immune Function: If you are underweight, there is an increased chance of you getting sick on a frequent basis due to a compromised immune system.
  3. Irregular Menstruation and Infertile: Not having the right body weight can cause women to have irregular periods which can then lead to infertility.
  4. Low Energy to Function: Since your body does not have the right weight to function, you will always feel tired.
  5. Anemia which causes lightheadedness and dizziness.
  6. Loss or thinning of hair, unhealthy teeth and skin.
