The medical world and individuals generally, have over the years, paid too much attention to obesity and its implications, but the main culprit to be avoided still remains energy-dense foods. However, being underweight also poses as much health risks as being overweight.

What Does Being Underweight Really Mean?

According to the definition given by the Centre For Disease Control (CDC), an individual is said to be underweight or to have low body weight if the Body Mass Index (BMI) reading is less than 18.5. Although using the reading from BMI might not be an accurate measure for underweight, it can serve as a yardstick that will lead your physician to carry out a further evaluation.

What are the Causes Of Low Body Weight

There are various factors that can lead you to be underweight. Some of these factors include:

  1. Malnutrition.
  2. Genetics or Family History of Underweight.
  3. Psychological disorders such as depression.
  4. Physical illness.
  5. Excessive and rigorous physical activities such as regular intensive exercise.
  6. An excessively high rate of body metabolism.

How Can You Tell If You Are Underweight?

There are various physical and psychological symptoms that can help in detecting the fact you might be underweight. Although, it must be mentioned that not everyone that is underweight will experience these symptoms which can be used as a way to tell if you are underweight or not.

Symptoms and risk factors associated with being underweight includes:

  1. Osteoporosis: This occurs as a result of low Bone Mineral Density (BMD). When you have low Bone Mineral Density there is an increased risk of the fragile bones getting easily broken.
  2. Decreased Immune Function: If you are underweight, there is an increased chance of you getting sick on a frequent basis due to a compromised immune system.
  3. Irregular Menstruation and Infertile: Not having the right body weight can cause women to have irregular periods which can then lead to infertility.
  4. Low Energy to Function: Since your body does not have the right weight to function, you will always feel tired.
  5. Anemia which causes lightheadedness and dizziness.
  6. Loss or thinning of hair, unhealthy teeth and skin.
