What is Cancer
In the body, the growth and division of a cell, through a process called meiosis, is a normal and healthy process that allows for continuity of life. Now, when the cells located in any part of the body begin to grow and multiply without control, cancer begins.
In simple terms, Cancer is a disease that involves the abnormal growth of cells in a part of the body with the ability to spread to other parts of the body. These cells then form a cluster called a tumor and can metastasize to various parts of the body to form more tumors.
A tumor can either be Benign or Malignant. A benign tumor is not cancerous or harmful and it does not metastasize to other parts of the body. While the Malignant tumor, on the other hand, is cancerous, grows with the nutrients it collects from the body tissues, metastasizes via the blood vessels and forms new tumors in other parts of the body. As of now, there are over 200 known types of Cancer, however, they have been grouped into five categories or types which will be detailed as you read further.
The Major Types Of Cancer
Cancer can be categorized into five major types which are Melanoma, Sarcoma, Carcinoma, Leukemia, and Lymphoma.
This type of cancer occurs in the pigment-producing cell also called melanocytes. Although it occurs mostly in the skin, melanomas have been seen to occur in the intestines, eyes, and mouth. There are also four types of melanomas which are; The Nodular Melanoma, The Acral Lentiginous Melanoma, The Superficial Spreading Melanoma, and The Lentigo Maligna Melanoma. Just like every other cancer, there is no particular cause of melanoma, however, one of the main risk factors associated with melanomas is overexposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Avoiding excessive exposure to UV radiation from the sun and not getting sunburned helps in the prevention of Melanomas.
This type of Cancer affects the connective tissues of your body and there are two main groups of sarcoma. These are the Bone Sarcoma and the Soft tissue Sarcoma. While the soft tissue sarcoma, as the name suggests, affects the soft tissues of your body such as cartilage, ligaments, blood vessels, tendons, deep skin tissues, fat, and muscles; the bone sarcoma affects the arms and legs mostly.
This type of cancer affects the tissues that line the internal organs of the body (epithelial tissues) such as the kidneys and liver. Carcinomas are the most common type of cancers and can be grouped into five types which are; The Squamous Cell Carcinoma, The Ductal Carcinoma In situ (DCIS), The Basal Cell Carcinoma, The Invasive Ductal Carcinoma and The Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC).
Leukemia is a type of cancer that begins in the lymphatic system and bone marrow and affects the blood-forming tissues of the body. Leukemia causes your White blood cell count to rise above normal and also stops your body from fighting off infections. Leukemia may either be Chronic or Acute and can affect the transportation of oxygen through the blood as well as prevent blood from clotting. Subsequently, it can lead to other ailments like anemia as it is characterized by easy bruising and bleeding, nosebleeds, fever, chills and a lot of other symptoms.
This affects cells in the lymph nodes called the lymphocytes. Lymphoma can occur in any part of the lymphatic system which includes the Spleen, the Bone Marrow, the Thymus, the Lymph nodes and the Tonsils. This form of Cancer has been divided into two parts which are the Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and the Non- Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The symptoms of Lymphoma are not easily noticeable, however, during an examination, your doctor may feel the lymph node in certain areas of your body like the armpit, neck, groin, upper chest and stomach. General symptom associated with this cancer includes fever, cough, bone pain and so on.
